Personal Statement

My engagement in civic life began in high school when I volunteered in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at my local children's hospital. I immediately fell in love with the feeling of helping others. Seeing the smile on a child's face made me realize how such a small sacrifice on my part could potentially make a big difference in somebody else's life. Since then, my interest and my passion in community service have only grown. Denison's commitment to service has provided me with a multitude of opportunities to become involved in my local community. I have run a committee which plans service events to connect Denison students with neighboring families and residents. I have also been fortunate enough to participate in America Reads, a tutoring program for elementary children. Through Big Brothers Big Sisters, I have had the opportunity to form a mentor relationship with my eleven-year-old "Little." I am very grateful that Denison supports these outreach programs and I have loved being able to further my engagement in service. I am excited about continuing my commitment to service learning as I finish my higher education and enter into adulthood.
