Bryan Gomez
California State University Northridge
Bryan Gomez, a second year student at California State University, Northridge, is a community service leader and future educator. He has made a life of selfless service, beginning with Boy Scouts in his youth to more recently working with disadvantaged children through both Coaching Corps and Everybody Reads. As a Committee Leader with Unified We Serve (UWS), CSUN's largest volunteer program, his commitment and direct impact on campus and in the community at large is recognized and celebrated. Bryan appreciates that service is the best avenue to demonstrate gratitude in his community and understands his role as a leader and mentor to future generations. Bryan's own educational pursuits and career goals exemplify how he has positioned himself to make significant change in our society by teaching our next generation of leaders the way to success through education.
Personal Statement
Since childhood, I have always been interested in contributing to my community. When I was 8 years old, my mom signed me up for Boy Scouts and that was my first encounter with selfless service; giving back without expecting to receive anything in return. The smiles and gratitude were enough for me keep going. From picking up trash in parks, collecting food and clothing for the homeless, to raising awareness, I enjoyed my time with the Boy Scouts tremendously.
I became more motivated to make a difference through community service by affiliating with Unified We Serve (UWS) here at CSUN. UWS has helped me discover many organizations that allow me to give back to the campus community. Coaching Corps has been one of my favorites because I get to play sports with children aged 7-9 and be a role model for teamwork, persistence and coordination. I have personally benefitted from my engagement in Coaching Corps, as it has been the perfect medium to develop my leadership and communication skills. These skills have translated well to my work with Everybody Reads, which provides me valuable face-time with the age-range of children I hope to teach someday.
