Personal Statement
Growing up in a low-income household has not only instilled in me the importance of community, but also the importance of education. I would not be attaining my degree if it wasn’t for the support I received through my high school, which gave opportunities to underrepresented students in NYC. Cristo Rey High School emphasized how education was the way to break the cycle of poverty. The resources given at my high school would’ve otherwise been difficult for low-income students to receive at an underfunded inner-city school. Through the Feinstein Institute at Providence College, I am able to plan and coordinate projects/events for middle school students in the Providence Public School District. Working to provide tutoring, mentoring, and enrichment programs to these students have fostered my passion for Education equity and has helped me become a better leader. Supporting low-income students is part of my greater mission in giving a voice to those who need it the most. It has inspired me to become an advocate where I aspire to make change through working in policy. Although there’s still a long way to diversify our leaders, it starts with us leading our own communities.
