Alexandria Williams
Tulane University
Alex is a third year student at Tulane University in New Orleans, studying Africana Studies and Political Science. She does advocacy work and organizing both on and off campus. She has worked for organizations like Women with a Vision, is currently serving as a mentor with Women and Youth Supporting Each Other (WYSE), and has been one of the student leaders leading the call for racial equity on Tulane's campus. All of her organizing work is done through a queer Black feminist lens that aims to simultaneously dismantle systems of oppression while enabling people to seek justice for themselves and their loved ones in their daily lives. Ultimately, she envisions a world where everyone is free to live in their truth. After college, she wants to work in the nonprofit sector as a lawyer for reproductive justice nonprofits and as a midwife in poor communities of color.
Personal Statement
Understanding, addressing and confronting racism and privilege are paramount to successful community engagement experiences, for both students and the communities with which we work. While serving as the Co-Convener and Co-President of Student Organizing Against Racism (SOAR), I have worked to unite student leaders from diverse backgrounds to address issues of racism, from the interpersonal level all the way to the structural level. Through continued dialog with people from different backgrounds, we start to confront the myths that create the negative preconception about communities. My role is to challenge and push our university to do more, while also working within the framework of our institution to help make these changes possible.
