Abigail Wolf
Providence College
During Abigail (Abby) Wolf's first two years on our campus, she has demonstrated a commitment to educating herself and others about issues of privilege, power, and social justice. Abby's approach to social change is collective, collaborative, and reflective. This year, Abby helped to create an event that was the centerpiece of this year's MLK Day, a multifaceted "privilege walk" to help participants "take steps toward empathy and respect." The skills Abby developed, making connections with others around common goals and interests, listening to the interests of diverse constituents, and those associated with long-range event planning and recruiting, are ones that will make her an even stronger leader for social justice and community engagement on the PC campus and beyond.
Personal Statement
Since the adoption of my younger brother when I was 9, I have been curious and driven by the ways in which the world is fair to some and unfair to others. When I came to Providence College, it was only natural that my major reflected my passion for community service and social justice. I have been given the resources at Providence College to further explore my passions through service learning and global service learning classes. Last year I studied community literacy in Nicaragua and this year I will be continuing my global service learning through a trip to Tijuana, Mexico. I have begun my journey for social change through an event that I created, "Cross the Line". Through this event, I was able to connect to the Providence College Community and begin a campus-wide discussion on privilege. The exercise and discussion I organized challenged students and faculty to reflect on their own privilege and the privilege of others in an attempt to create an atmosphere of greater understanding in the PC community. The success of this event has inspired me to continue my work for social justice for the rest of my years at PC and for the rest of my life.
