Framing the Photo Contest: Social Media & Volunteering

February 10, 2015

Irish NGO Comhlámh’s Guidelines for the Use of Social Media in Volunteering help us prepare for our upcoming photo contest. The concise code of conduct provides considerations for using images, messages and social media linked to overseas experiences. While social media can be a compelling communication tool, the “challenge is how to accurately represent those you live and work alongside, and effectively communicate the complexities of development.” Comhlámh asks,

  • Do volunteers have a role to play in communicating messages about development?
  • If so, what is this role?
  • Whose perspectives on development are being represented?
