First Annual Iowa Campus Compact Awards Presented April 13, 2007
On April 13, 2007, Iowa Campus Compact presented awards to faculty, staff, students and community partners of its member institutions. The awards ceremony took place during Iowa Campus Compact’s annual “Celebrating Campus and Community Engagement” conference held this year at Central College in Pella, Iowa.
The Iowa Campus Compact Faculty Service-Learning Award for Excellence in Research and Scholarship was awarded to Marguerite “Peggy” Fitch, Professor of Psychology, Central College in Pella, Iowa. Kenneth G. Brown, Associate Professor of Management and Organizations and Huneke Faculty Research Fellow, Henry B. Tippie College of Business, University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, was named as an honorable mention.
The Iowa Campus Compact Faculty Service-Learning Award for Excellence in Teaching and Service was awarded to Tammy Faux, Assistant Professor of Social Work, Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Katie Selle, Associate Professor of Nursing, Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa, was named as an honorable mention.
The Iowa Campus Compact Staff Service Award was awarded to Cheri Doane, Director of Community Based Learning, Central College in Pella, Iowa. Jim Hayes, Assistant Director for the Lilly Initiative for Vocational Discernment, Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa; and Mary Coan, Director of Campus Ministry, Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa, were named as honorable mentions.
The Iowa Campus Compact Community Partner Award was awarded to Children and Family Urban Ministries of Des Moines, Iowa. Children and Family Urban Ministries was nominated by two campus partners, Central College and Simpson College. Lutheran Social Services — Bremwood campus in Waverly, IA was named as an honorable mention. Lutheran Social Services — Bremwood campus was nominated by campus partner, Wartburg College.
The Iowa Swearer Student Humanitarian Awards was awarded to Stephanie Williams of Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, IA, and to Annie Wignall of Central College in Pella, Iowa. Matt Menietti of University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa and Regina King of Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa were named as honorable mentions. Williams and Wignall will advance to the national Swearer Student Humanitarian Award competition that recognizes five students each year for their outstanding public service and provides financial support toward their continued efforts to address societal needs.
Seven students were inducted into the first annual Iowa Campus Compact Senior Honor Circle class recognizing excellence in service and civic engagement activity during their college education. Natalie Wicklund of the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa was inducted as the 2007 Senior Honor Circle’s Honorary Chairperson. Other Senior Honor Circle inductees include: Shaima Muhammad of Central College, Pella, Iowa; Kristin Musser of University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa; Jessica Nadeau of Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa; Robert Nalean and Omar Padilla, both of Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa; and Kelsey Zlab of Central College, Pella, Iowa.
Adam Mennig, Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa, was also recognized as a nominee for the Frank Newman Leadership Award. The Newman Award is a national award from Campus Compact that recognizes students with financial need and civic leadership potential and provides both financial support and mentorship to help them achieve their academic and civic goals.
Iowa Campus Compact is a coalition of 19 colleges and universities committed to strengthening communities through campus-community partnerships and education for informed and active citizenship. Our members include two-year and four-year institutions. Iowa Campus Compact is also a part of the national Campus Compact network of 31 state organizations, a national office, and over 1,000 campuses.
