2019 Civic Action Academy
This unique professional development opportunity for students interested in learning new ways of making a difference and building skills through civic and community engagement. The event will be held on November 8 and 9, 2019 at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Students from across the Midwest and beyond (undergraduate and graduate) are invited to learn from professionals across sectors. Sessions will offer skill-building in civic action including philanthropy, leadership, dialogue, advocacy and more. Students will also have a chance to learn what others are doing on other campuses and network with peers.

Decolonizing Approaches to Inclusive Discussions and Trainings: Lessons from Indigenous Perspectives
The future of community engagement work requires a framework that is strengths-based, centers historically underrepresented groups working towards justice on their terms, and includes an analysis of power, positionality, systemic causes of disparities, needs for institutional changes, and critiques of inclusion assumptions. This session will provide decolonizing practice resources, concrete examples, and a chance to reflect on how to apply the practices to your context. Examples include an interactive session focused on how instructors, trainers, and supervisors can create environments that feel relevant, welcoming, and safe to all participants. Let’s play Votes & Ballots: Creating quality action plans for democratic engagement through gamification
In this webinar, participants will be introduced to Votes & Ballots, an interactive activity that takes the guesswork out of on-campus democratic engagement. Players are tasked with creating a comprehensive action plan while keeping in mind their institution’s historical voting rates (via NSLVE data), their resources, and the unique challenges faced by student voters. Votes & Ballots has been primarily played among students and staff, but, with an eye toward deepening faculty engagement, a Votes & Ballots: Curricular Edition is in development. Registration to join a C.O.P. opens October 10th By joining one of our new communities of practice (CoP) on Information Technology (IT) and the Community Engaged Professional (CEP), you can help to shape best practices and share ideas to support yourself and peers. These communities will be open to everyone working in the domains of community engagement and higher education, but the sponsor will cap each group’s number of participants to twelve (12) in order to keep the groups manageable and engaged. BPACE : Assessing Student Learning Outcomes
Registration opens October 10, 2019 OVERVIEW With the help of facilitators and mentors, participants will develop and implement an assessment plan or project that targets students’ civic learning and development (e.g., working with others, civic communication, civic identity, civic literacy or knowledge). Participating in BPACE is beneficial to individuals and institutions seeking guidance in implementing, maintaining, strengthening, or expanding their current assessment plans to include a civic dimension. FORMAT: This is a 100% online learning experience hosted through the learning management platform Canvas, with synchronous, online meetings being held via Zoom. No travel or in-person meetings are expected as part of your enrollment in the SLO track of BPACE. WHO SHOULD ENROLL? Call for Papers - The 8th International Symposium on Service-Learning Proposal submissions of 350 words, to be submitted according to the format indicated on this call for papers. The deadline for submissions is November 30th 2019. Proposals are limited to two submissions per presenter. Transformation has become a central discussion theme in the higher education landscape worldwide. Forecasts reveal that higher education institutions might become virtual entities that compete for survival, which will render face-to-face interaction of the lecture hall redundant.
