Compact21 is the Western and Midwestern Campus Compact's 2021 conference series, held virtually on March 17th and May 25th respectively. This series will comprise two 4-hour virtual conferences focused on Resilience and Responsibility for Racial and Environmental Justice, two components of the systemic injustice that result in the unkept promise of full and equitable participation in education, employment, health care and environmental quality. March 17, 2021: Continuums of Service , 12:00 PM-3:00 PM (Pacific) May 25, 2021: Midwest Conference, 12:00 PM-3:00 PM (Pacific) Conference participants, students, community partners, national service members, veterans, faculty, staff, and administrators will explore how to partner in renewing the promise of full participation in higher education, a flourishing democracy, and productive, meaningful and gainful careers. In keeping these promises we will support the development of student, community and campus resilience by achieving and defining a civic consensus on our collective boundary-spanning responsibilities for racial and environmental justice. This event is designed for campus teams to come together and work on creating and implementing strong Civic Action Plans. Teams can include individuals from across campus and beyond including faculty, staff, administrators, students and community partners. We also recommend engaging leaders from across campus including faculty, staff from a variety of areas (diversity, ministry, teaching and learning, research, etc), student leaders, and community partners. Teams will have the opportunity to consider new strategies for civic action including applying an equity lens and engaging key campus leaders and will have the opportunity to work together and receive expert consultation on their planning and/or implementation.

The shift to remote learning this past year has highlighted challenges and opportunities for both preparing students for online learning environments and incorporating effective assessment and evaluation of student learning in an online setting. Additional challenges and opportunities emerge when community-engaged learning is at the center of your course. The goal of this session is to provide frameworks, examples, and resources as well as time with peers to discuss next steps for implementation in your own community-engaged online courses. Effective community-engaged learning begins with specific community and student learning goals, including academic/disciplinary, professional, personal, and civic. These can serve as a beacon that participants use to navigate remote and virtual CEL. This webinar will also introduce participants to the development of goals and outcomes for CEL and preparation of students for the learning process unique to online environments. This session will focus on strategies for addressing the challenges in a remote teaching environment, including equity and accessibility issues; effective approaches for building community in an online setting and communicating expectations and strategies for student success. Presented as part of the Fusion Webinar Series. The Fusion Project provides critical training and support for faculty as they continue to navigate online teaching as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and offers instruction for how to integrate community engagement methodologies into existing curricula to improve the quality of course delivery and foster student engagement. As part of the Fusion Project, in partnership with Maine Campus Compact, we are offering a series of 4 free webinars to provide added support to faculty with the generous support of the Davis Educational Foundation.
