Dr. Margaret Stevens, Director of Service-Learning Programs at Northern Kentucky University (NKU), Highland Heights, KY, has been selected as the new Executive Director of Indiana Campus Compact (ICC).

“We are pleased to find a new executive director for ICC who has such an appropriate background to lead this statewide organization devoted to service-learning and civic engagement,” said ICC Chair Dr. Carol Ann Mooney, President of Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN. “She is an excellent choice, selected from a strong pool of candidates.”

ICC is a network of 44 Indiana colleges and universities working with students, faculty, and staff to promote community service and civic involvement in neighboring communities.

Stevens replaces Sister Jacquelyn McCracken who has served as ICC’s Executive Director for five years. During McCracken’s tenure ICC’s member schools grew from 32 to 44. She will become the first Service-Learning Program Director at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis.

“I welcome Dr. Stevens as my successor and know that she will continue to build strong relationships between our member campuses and their surrounding communities,” McCracken said. “We are fortunate to have someone of her caliber and experience become ICC’s next Executive Director.”

Stevens will assume her new role on July 1. “At ICC, I will be able to broaden the scope of my promotion of service-learning through the statewide reach of Indiana Campus Compact,” she said. “During the past two years, I have secured funding for innovative service-learning programs for Northern Kentucky University that have forged strong relationships between the school and the community. The funding also allowed us to further develop a student philanthropy program.”

She added, “It is exciting to be chosen to lead a growing organization that currently has collaborations with campuses in dozens of Indiana communities.”

While at NKU, Stevens traveled to Oman and the United Arab Emirates twice over the past two years to assist with the creation of service-learning programs in two teacher education programs at Sultan Qaboos University (Muscat, Oman) and United Arab Emirates University (Al-Ain, UAE).

Prior to joining the staff at NKU, she served as Director of Experiential Learning Programs at the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Cincinnati.

She received her BA in Psychology from Saint Louis University, her MS in Human Resources Management from the University of Charleston, and her Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Cincinnati. Her dissertation was entitled, “Service-Learning and Its Impact on First-Year College Students in a First-Year Seminar.”

She has considerable experience developing, implementing, and administering service-learning and experiential programs both within the curriculum and as extra-curricular projects and activities. She has also published and lectured numerous times on these and related topics.

“My husband Dave, our two children, Alison and Colin, and I look forward to relocating to Indianapolis,” Stevens said.
