137 students from across the United States were named Newman Civic Fellows by Campus Compact — including Geography and Urban Studies sophomore Yuan Huang.

The Newman Civic Fellows Awards honor inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. From 30 states, college and university presidents have nominated the best-of-the-best: inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. Through service, research, and advocacy, these Newman Civic Fellows are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves, the root causes of social issues, and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change.

Huang is active in the Philadelphia community through a variety of projects that focus on supporting young people. She is involved with the Temple Community Gardens, where  she worked to increase student involvement in the effort from three to thirty, facilitating the establishment of three community gardens. Huang also tutors public school children in Chinese and with Project H.O.M.E.’s teen after-school learning center.

Speaking about this year’s honorees, Campus Compact President Maureen F. Curley explained, “These students represent the next generation of public problem solvers and civic leaders. They serve as national examples of the role that higher education can—and does play in building a better world.”
