Program will support community organizations through college student internships

For immediate release, November 8, 2018: Campus Compact and Tyson Foods today announced the second year of the Tyson Foods Summer Community Internship Program. The program provides full-time college students with an eight-week paid summer job at a community organization at no cost to the organization, providing select college students with an invaluable opportunity to spend the summer gaining professional experience while making a positive impact in local communities.  As in 2018, Tyson Foods is underwriting this program, which will continue in the summer of 2019 in Chicago, Illinois and Sioux City, Storm Lake and Council Bluffs, Iowa.

“We’re excited to support this successful partnership that connects talented young people with local nonprofits to help amplify the great work these organizations are already doing,” said Dan Heffernan, vice president of human resources operations, Tyson Foods. “Together they are making a positive impact in our communities and providing invaluable experience for the students.”

The program is managed by Iowa and Illinois Campus Compact affiliates, who will work in partnership with colleges and universities to help recruit qualified student interns for organizations that are actively making a difference in their communities.

“Tyson Interns working with Chicagoland nonprofits made an amazing impact on their communities last summer,” said Natalie Furlett, executive director of Illinois Campus Compact. “ They supported urban farms, citizenship curriculum, and summer programming for kids and so much more.  We are excited to partner with the Chicago community and Tyson again to continue to make a difference.”

“Last year, Iowa’s interns were able to make an enormous difference in their organizations by creating marketing materials, raising funds, and much more,” said Iowa Campus Compact Executive Director Emily Shields. “We look forward to continuing this great partnership and impacting student learning and community needs.”

During the summer of 2018, the program offered placements to 20 students at community organizations in Illinois and 20 students at community organizations in Iowa. Tyson interns reported the best part of their experience was helping the community, professional development, and making a positive difference in other’s lives. Organizations reported that the students were able to develop partnerships to boost their impact. The program will be open to a similar number of students and organizations in the summer of 2019.

The application process is now open for both community organizations interested in receiving a grant to host an intern and students interested in being matched with organizations. All nonprofits and public organizations within the designated communities are eligible to apply; however, applications are especially encouraged from those focused directly or indirectly on hunger relief, adult education, and immigrant services. Organizations will be selected based on need and capacity to provide a quality student experience.
