The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has announced the results of the 2015 round of the Community Engagement Classification.  Although less than 25% of all colleges and universities in the United States are members of Campus Compact, 83% of the 240 colleges and universities receiving the 2015 classification are Campus Compact members.

The Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement may be sought by any college or university. The Community Engagement classification was first offered in 2006 as part of an extensive restructuring of The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Unlike the Foundation’s other classifications that rely on national data, this is an elective classification; institutions participate voluntarily by submitting required materials describing the nature and extent of their engagement with communities beyond the campus.

Application review, which is conduced by the New England Resource Center for Higher Education, examines the extent to which colleges and universities have embedded civic education and community partnerships into all facets of the institution. The strong showing by Campus Compact members demonstrates the coalition’s success in supporting institutional transformation. Campus Compact supported members in the Carnegie process by hosting an online learning community.

Carnegie review occurs every five years. Institutions classified in 2015 will need to seek re-classification in 2025.
