    Parkside students participate in Learn and Serve Challenge Week

    SOMERS, WI — The University of Wisconsin-Parkside joined thousands of educational institutions across the country by taking part in Learn and Serve Challenge Week Sept. 17-23. Service-learning is a teaching method incorporating community work into the curriculum, giving students real-world experience in their field while meeting pressing community needs.     Montana campuses give a lot back

    Montanans don’t typically ask for much, but they give a whole lot back. In a study released in April, the Corporation for National and Community Service reported that Montana ranks seventh among the 50 states in its citizen volunteer rate. While 27 percent of Americans regularly volunteer, an impressive 38 percent of Montanans habitually donate their time to help causes across the state.

    Hammond, LA — Louisiana Campus Compact will implement the Ready Campus program statewide for 2007-2008.     Professors receive grants to develop new civics courses

    Two Notre Dame De Namur University professors recently received grants from the Carnegie Foundation Faculty Fellows Program to develop community-based learning courses that encourage students to be politically engaged. Just 25 faculty members from public and private universities in the state were chosen for this honor. Don Stannard-Friel, professor of sociology and anthropology, and Gretchen Wehrle, chair of NDNU’s Psychology and Sociology Department, were selected as faculty fellows for the California Campus Compact — Carnegie Foundation Faculty Fellows: Service-Learning for Political Engagement Program.

    BSU DVD aimed at Latino families

    Muncie — A group of Ball State University students has created an educational DVD to help Latino high school students and their parents better navigate the college application process. The 15-minute video, “¡Sí, puedes! Making college possible,” covers four main issues Latinos encounter when considering a college education: the benefits of going to college, coping with common fears, how to qualify and apply for college and where to find money to pay for it.
