Kirsten Rowe
High Point University
Kirsten Rowe, a third year student at High Point University, is a Bonner Leader involved in making the campus and the city a better place. She extends hospitality to all who come to our campus through her work as a Campus Concierge. She participates in the Honors Scholars Program and is a criminal justice major. She is the director for the West End Ministries after-school tutoring program, serving 20-30 students a week. Over the last year she has worked to renovate storage rooms to become classrooms with the help of a city grant. She consistently recruits HPU students to create a 1 to 1 ratio for tutors and has developed curriculum and policies.
Personal Statement
Serving in the community of High Point has been the most influential part of my time at High Point University. When I began college and the Bonner Leader Program, I had no idea what to expect. I anticipated taking my classes and working a few hours. I didn’t think that the service was going to have such an impact on my life. Whenever I question staying at the university, or I feel like I’m being overburdened with homework, I think about my time in the community with the Bonner Program. By being a part of such an incredible organization and working with the Boys and Girls Club at West End Ministries, I’ve been able to see the impact that I’m making in the lives of the kids. This year on of our new students was also new to the area and seemed reserved, soft-spoken and not very interested in learning. After working with her, she’s come out of her shell. She has transformed into this intelligent, outgoing, and confident little girl. She reminds me why I tutor. I will never regret my decision to serve the community. It has truly changed my life and made me who I am today.
