Luckario Alcide
Fairfield University
Luckario Alcide ’21, a communications major and Humanitarian Action minor, serves on the executive board of Fairfield University’s chapter of the Jesuit Universities Humanitarian Action Network (JUHAN). Through this student-led organization, he has organized multiple programs and campaigns to raise awareness of humanitarian crises around the world. Most notably, he leads JUHAN’s annual service immersion program to Abilene, Texas, where students serve with the International Rescue Committee and work with recently resettled refugee families. In addition, through Center for Social Impact’s Community-Engaged Research program, Luckario currently supports data collection efforts for a large-scale community needs assessment in partnership with the United Way. In the summer of 2018, Luckario worked in Brazil with the rainforest conservation NGO Iracambi as part of Fairfield’s international internship program. He is also an active member of the Black Student Union and was a Class Senator of the Fairfield University Student Association (FUSA). In January 2020, he was presented with the MLK Vision Award, which recognizes members of the Fairfield University community whose record and service reflect a strong commitment to the ideals and values of Martin Luther King, Jr. through courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility, and service.
Personal Statement
Dr. King once said, “We must use time creatively, in the knowledge that the time is always ripe to do right.” This quote inspires an ingrained feeling and mindset that I hold to this day. My involvement with my community speaks true to what Dr. King envisioned as the ideal way of living. Throughout my time at Fairfield University, I have been a part of organizations that focus on activism, social change, service, and humanitarianism. My current leadership of the Jesuit Universities Humanitarian Action Network club is the way I embody the mission to strive for a better world. Through this group, we act as agents of social change on campus and raise awareness about various issues that hinder the advancement of an ethical world. Most importantly, we advocate on behalf of refugees and migrants. In collaboration with the IRC, we organize an annual immersion experience for students to become more familiar with the refugee crisis and work on the front lines with refugees in Abilene, Texas. This immersion has been one of the highlights of my academic career and I feel a duty to enhance this program for student participants to learn, reflect and grow.
