Gateway Community College (GCC) serves the largest number of Pell-Grant recipients in the Connecticut State College and University System. GGC is a campus community that represents a diverse student body, housed in the county with the highest rates of poverty in Connecticut. GCC seeks to increase access to food security for students and employees through the development and implementation of an on-campus food pantry. The member will play an integral role in assessing the current needs of the GCC community related to food insecurity and will help in the design and implementation of an on-campus pantry. The member will work to seek outside funding opportunities, develop partnerships with other food security-related organizations, and create effective systems to track food security efforts at GCC. The member will have the opportunity to be part of a brand-new initiative, serving a community in need.

Member Duties: The AmeriCorps member will be responsible for assessing the current food security needs of the students and employees at GCC. The member will analyze existing data, collect new information, and work with community organizations to evaluate the data related to food insecurity. This position serves as the backbone of two key community engagement initiatives at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. The first is the launch of the first cohort of Bonner student leaders in Hawaii. This position would develop the application and marketing process for the program, build relationships with community organizations and creates community partner agreements, map capacity of community organizations, track student engagement, monitor partnership progress with respect to community impact and student development, oversee affiliation and communicate with the Bonner Foundation, and prepare an annual community engagement report. The second community engagement initiative is the implementation of a centralized community partner activities database. Building out this database will include outreach to departments and community organizations to document who is doing what, with whom, and where on Hawaii Island. This position will be instrumental in determining the impact of the university on our rural, low-income communities.

National Louis University has developed a comprehensive resource center to support low-income college students. The THRIVE Resource Center serves as a single point of contact for essential wrap-around services such as emergency assistance and social services referrals. The AmeriCorps member will assist in curating and expanding community resources and assist in building essential relationships, additionally, the THRIVE Resource Center will grow and expand opportunities to respond to the needs of the whole student.

Member Duties: The AmeriCorps member at NLU THRIVE will: 1. Curate, manage and leverage community resources in key domains such as food and housing insecurities, financial literacy, employment, and childcare/support for parenting students. 2. Coordinate topics, logistics, and establish programming for “Pizza and Perspectives.” Pizza and Perspectives is a community health engagement program where guest speakers inside and outside the community create a safe space for discussing relevant health and wellness issues of young adults. 3. Increase donation drives to meet the needs of our low-income students. 4. The AmeriCorps member serving at Northwestern University (NWU) will provide support services to low-income, first-generation students to foster identity development and navigate campus resources to build community. Through campus-wide partnerships, Student Enrichment Services (SES) strives to build an inclusive Northwestern community that is welcoming, supportive, and accessible for all students. The AmeriCorps member at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology will work in the Bachelors in Psychology Completion program. The member will work closely with the Associate Department Chair of the BA Program and the director of Community Partnerships to create service-learning opportunities for undergraduate students enrolled in the program. The member will be responsible for creating and overseeing an undergraduate student club that focuses upon volunteer efforts in the greater Chicago region. member will work with Community Partnerships to assist students in service-learning work that will help to build their resumes and also provide services to those in need in the community. In addition, the member will also work to develop resources (financial, educational, and personal) for students.

Part of this process will include outreach to departments within all 16 UIC colleges, as well as to known community partners. Assisted by a committee of campus and community partners, the AmeriCorps member will develop and implement assessments that measure UIC impact on nonprofits and the communities they serve, emphasizing educational needs in low-income communities. The member will develop new partnerships with additional organizations, especially in Chicago neighborhoods that face disproportionate hardships and with limited access to UIC. The AmeriCorps member will develop the Galaxy Digital service platform and train community organizations and internal partners for use.

The AmeriCorps member serving at Wilbur Wright College (WWC) will build capacity for the WWC Wellness Center, which provides mental health and other social services to support students’ personal well-being and academic success and specifically assists low-income students with accessing healthcare and other basic needs. The AmeriCorps member at the WWC Wellness Center will assess student needs especially related to Outreach and education about health and mental wellness to increase student participation in both counseling services and outreach programming. They will research best practices and models for meeting these needs at other institutions and will develop a comprehensive Outreach plan. The member will identify and recruit facilitators from Staff and Community Partners for Outreach events for students and will evaluate current community partners for effectiveness and grow the number of community partners involved.

Member Duties: The AmeriCorps member will assess current Wilbur Wright College Wellness Center outreach programming, review best practices and redesign outreach programming. The goals of the project are to increase student participation in outreach, increase student participation in direct clinical services, and increase the quality and number of community partners. The AmeriCorps project will seek to improve student academic engagement through addressing literacy skills and building capacity for initiatives focused on out-of-school time programs, family engagement, and service-learning with local K-12 schools. The project expects to benefit students in Arlington, VA, and Washington, DC who are enrolled in schools in which children from low-income families make up at least 40% of the population. The AmeriCorps member will collaborate with our community partner – Hope Multiplied. Our partnership and participation in this proposed project will serve as a pilot for future partnerships with similar community-based organizations. Hope Multiplied has documented unmet needs across Arlington, VA, and Washington, DC, and are committed to expanding programming and resources into these communities. The AmeriCorps member will play a critical role in making this dream a reality. 

Member Duties: The Campus Compact AmeriCorps member serving at Marymount University will: 1. Review and complete onboarding activities 2. Identify assets and resources related to campus/community partnerships and current literacy initiatives 3. Garner additional resources and assets through capacity-building activities 4. Expand campus/community partnerships and develop processes to sustainably expand services 5. Train Marymount and Hope Multiplied staff and volunteers to identify and support anti-poverty, literacy programming 6. Build sustainable evaluation measures to record improved academic engagement

The biweekly living allowance for this position is $791.70. In addition to the benefits listed, the host site will provide on-campus housing, a transit pass, fitness center access, and a work laptop. The Food Systems and Insecurity AmeriCorps VISTA member will work in conjunction with the University of Mary Washington’s Center for Community Engagement and Office of Sustainability to support and maintain accessible and affordable food systems to benefit low-income students and community members actively experiencing food insecurity. In this effort, the Vista member will actively work within the broader Fredericksburg area to identify barriers to accessible and affordable food systems and develop programs that directly support a healthy future for low-income communities

Member Duties:  The AmeriCorps member at the University of Mary Washington will: 1. Research and apply for grant opportunities that directly support the VISTA member’s mission 2. Build and maintain sustainable frameworks for community-based food systems such as community gardens 3. Connect and develop relationships with Fredericksburg community partners and organizations 4. Research ongoing community efforts and existing barriers, both internal and external, to a local, healthy, affordable diet 5. Develop new and engaging education programs that promote community engagement and support for low-income communities

The Student Engagement Center AmeriCorps member at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will decrease homelessness, increase participation in food assistance programs, and increase college graduation rates of low-income students by recruiting and training volunteers, creating new outreach programs, and developing training and support materials for the Student Engagement Center staff. 

Member Duties: The Campus Compact AmeriCorps member serving at UW-Green Bay will: 1. Create marketing and promotions materials for service and volunteerism programs and CUEGB.com 2. Assess and develop an action plan to increase the number of families taking part in food assistance benefits and programs 3. Develop training and support materials for community partners, student organizations, faculty, and staff 4. Recruit volunteers for community partner agencies to fill vacant volunteer roles with trained and qualified students, faculty, or staff from UWGB.

The AmeriCorps member serving at the University of Wisconsin – Madison will serve at a VISTA project which increases the capacity of the University for highly effective, mutually-beneficial partnerships with anti-poverty nonprofit organizations in Wisconsin through an enhanced liaison and partnership support model. The focus of these partnerships will be organizational capacity-building activities to realize anti-poverty missions. Partnering organizations focus on ensuring healthy futures through work on food security, opioid use treatment, and community empowerment. The AmeriCorps member will partner with 6-8 nonprofit organizations to refine the standard intake process with nonprofits’ seeking university partnership, refine the matching of these nonprofits with courses that engage in community-based learning partnerships and support these courses, support use and development of a new Customer Relations Management database to track partnerships, match and support partnership opportunities, and enhance intra-campus communication.

Member Duties: The Campus Compact AmeriCorps member serving at UW-Madison will serve a key role in implementing the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Civic Action Plan. The AmeriCorps member will build the capacity of UW-Madison for partnership with Wisconsin nonprofits focused on addressing poverty and especially promoting healthy futures for our communities. This position will be based at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Community and Nonprofit Studies (the CommNS) in the School of Human Ecology. Additional supervision will be provided by UW South Madison Partnership (UWSMP). Some travel to meet with partnering nonprofit organizations around the state is anticipated.

The Food Security AmeriCorps member at UW Parkside and the Shalom Center Food Pantry will address food security among students at UW-Parkside and the surrounding community by evaluating current program effectiveness, building partnerships and volunteer support, generating resources, and devising inclusive outreach strategies for under-served community members.

Member Duties: The Campus Compact AmeriCorps member serving at UW Parkside will: 1. Conduct research and train staff to evaluate the equity and success of the Shalom Center food programs, as well as the satisfaction of food program clients by collecting and analyzing data and feedback from clients and partners. 2. Prepare a report and presentation of research and recommendations for stakeholders. 3. Design and implement a culturally appropriate and targeted plan to increase awareness of Shalom Center and other food resources in the Kenosha Community, including low-income Parkside students 4. Develop a strategy/plan (with stakeholders) to provide greater access to emergency food for UW-Parkside students and identify resources to support it. (possibly a campus food pantry) 4. Cultivate partnerships to access and promote food security resources (federal, state, and local resources) for UW-Parkside students and recruit student volunteers to sustain this effort.

The Civic Scholars Leadership program for second-year students is the signature program of the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE), founded in 2020. The Civic Scholars Leadership program melds cohort building and culturally relevant pedagogy with access to mentors and service opportunities in Brown County and helps students develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for civic leadership and academic success. This placement is a good fit for individuals interested in working at the intersection of equity and community-based learning and developing their research and mentoring skills. The AmeriCorps member will also support the growth and sustainability of CCE programming that serves students and community outcomes.
