Personal Statement

I have been interested in education since as long as I can remember. I have known that I want to teach in some capacity since I was in second grade. Through my post-secondary experiences and the opportunity to take a variety of literature and writing classes, I have found that I am passionate about teaching reading and writing and have developed the specialized skill of working with students who struggle or have learning disabilities. Working in a variety of classrooms has shown me how important it is that students be able to demonstrate proficiency in reading and writing and what we, as educators, can do to help get those students to proficiency. On campus, I volunteer at an elementary school focusing on developing early literacy and reading skills in Kindergarten students. I also work as a writing center consultant to help develop the writing process with my peers at Rocky Mountain College. I am also very active in professional development activities that help me to develop better educational approaches in the English field.
