Gloria Darko, Susquehanna University

Gloria DarkoGloria Darko is a senior at Susquehanna University Gloria has been a quiet, inspirational leader to peers at SU. She connects with students on campus who need some guidance, and many students look up to her.In the words of one organization advisor who works closely with Gloria “for her, leadership isn’t just something she does, it’s part of who she is.” Gloria has had a large impact on an increasingly diverse campus. She regularly meets one-on-one with first-year students to give them direction, encouragement, and practical advice. Gloria gave a public presentation on the cultural, political, and social meanings of African American hair. It offered in-depth historical and cultural analysis and opened up discussion of current cultural practices and meanings surrounding this issue. The program was standing-room only and led to wonderful learning by all present and great group discussion.
-L. Jay Lemons, President

My faith in Jesus is the reason why I do what I do. He is my motivation to serve others wholeheartedly without expecting anything in return. He also inspires me to live a life of love and compassion. My faith keeps me going even when I get tired. I like to view every situation in life as an opportunity to encourage and inspire others because if it weren’t for the people who encouraged and helped me throughout my life, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Even though sometimes I fail, I am grateful for all of the opportunities I have had to get involved and be selfless. I am so grateful for the desire I have in my heart to see change in this world. It reminds me to never be complacent. I think there are far too many people in this world who are talkers and not enough people who put their head knowledge to action. When I hear that there is a problem, I want to know, “What are we going to do about it?”
