Emilie Jacobson, Mount Mercy University
Emilie Jacobson, a third year student at Mount Mercy University, is a student leader active in science education outreach and helping others in need. For the past three years, she has been instrumental in the growth of Mount Mercy University’s Science Club’s outreach program, which is designed to increase elementary students’ interest in science, engineering, technology, and mathematics. Her enthusiasm for helping young students become excited for science can be seen in her active role as a CheMMUsical Show performer. The CheMMUsical Show is an exciting performance of chemistry demonstrations set to music, and Emilie is transitioning from being a performer to assisting in the choreography and organization of the show. Under her leadership, the Science Club is increasing its impact on and off campus alike. Emilie is exceptionally passionate about helping others and her ability to make effective changes through her service work is limitless.
-Laurie Hamen, President
My enthusiasm for science and community involvement has been cultivated since my childhood, so I was very fortunate to come to Mount Mercy and continue to engage in similar service opportunities. For the past three years, I have been involved in a science outreach program that has a goal of increasing elementary students’ interest in science. It is important that they stay excited so they are better prepared to take science courses in college. One of the best ways to do this is through hands on activities as well as experiencing science in fun and creative ways. As a performer for the CheMMUsical Show, which is a fusion of chemistry demonstrations and music, I have been able to see their excitement and enthusiasm for science grow within minutes. In addition, I volunteer my time to help those in need by volunteering at a local free health clinic. I also voluntarily work with a paraplegic young man, helping him perform a home exercise program and keeping him motivated to remain active despite his personal obstacles. I am extremely proud of being involved in my community and knowing that I am a part of something bigger than myself.
