Brandon Johnson, Le Moyne College

Brandon Johnson, a senior at Le Moyne College, is deeply committed to serving the greater Syracuse community. Majoring in Management and Leadership, Brandon used his skills to resurrect an inactive organization, motivate and inspire his peers to engage in social justice, and provide much needed service in the community. Through Le Moyne’s Projects in the Community (PIC), Brandon’s emphasis is not on direct service, but on building the capacity and infrastructure within community service organizations so that they are better able to serve others. Under Brandon’s leadership, PIC did as many as seven service projects per semester, including working at Chadwick Residence (a home for single mothers and their children), Carrier Dome, where they staffed the admission tables for a children and young people’s event, and assisting at the Central New York Food Bank. Brandon is a highly committed and dedicated leader with a commitment to developing the talents of his classmates as future leaders of Le Moyne’s social justice initiatives.

During my studies at Le Moyne; I’ve led, as an example for other students, as the President of Projects in the Community and have made contributions to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of CNY. I have made it a personal mission to make a difference for organizations in Syracuse while having this opportunity to learn in the community. Since beginning in September, 2013 of my sophomore year, I’ve been a weekly volunteer with the Ronald McDonald House. My job responsibilities began with cooking dinners with a suite-mate, and advancing to running fundraisers and speaking on behalf of the organization accepting major donations. 
Projects in the Community has worked with many local charities. Since I have become a part of the leadership, these charities include Person2Person: Citizen Advocacy, the Chadwick Residence, and the CNY Food Bank. The direction I lead with Projects in the Community is to help the most disadvantaged in the community. Projects have been organized at women’s shelters, such as the Chadwick Residence, and food shelters like the Rescue Mission. It’s through these efforts that my team has been able to combat social issues of hunger and fear.
