Joy Zimmer, Carroll Community College
Joy’s philosophy about service-learning includes the idea that service to the community is a duty and a responsibility of all civic-minded individuals. She has helped other student leaders to understand the importance of service through her involvement as the President of the Service-Learning Club at Carroll Community College. She has learned how to teach other students about the importance of service, while infusing fun, education and problem-solving in each project she undertakes. Some of the activities that Joy has led include partnering with the Boys and Girls Club of Westminster on various educational projects for children in the club, working with Habitat for Humanity to provide safe and affordable housing for citizens of Carroll County, teaching and learning about fair trade with SERRV, International and preparing and serving meals at our Cold Weather Shelter. Joy naturally attracts other students to service projects because she has a passion that is hard to ignore.

There are many challenges in our world. My focus is on children. Children need quality role models. I have tried to fulfill this capacity by being a mentor and a camp counselor on multiple occasions from sixth grade to present. At my church I lead a group of fifth grade girls who look up to me. We learn from each other about life, faith, and serving others. Another part of addressing children’s needs is their physical needs. About six months ago I chose to sponsor a child in Guatemala. My sponsored child receives meals and an education. While physical needs are important, so are emotional needs. This summer I’m going on a mission trip with my church to Guatemala where our primary purpose is to demonstrate love to orphans. My career plan is to become a teacher. I want to teach children not only the importance of learning, but also that someone cares about them. Children are the world of tomorrow. As more children experience deep caring, my hope is that we will experience fewer problems in our world.
