Daniel Tuchler, University of California, Berkeley

As an third year undergraduate on the University of California Berkeley campus Daniel Tuchler has achieved an extraordinary service record. Daniel served as a Bonner Leader AmeriCorps member and Cal in the Capital (CITC) Student Director in 2011-12, when he committed 300 hours of service over the course of the academic year. Founded in 1965, CITC annually selects 75 UC Berkeley students and prepares them for challenging summer internships in Washington, DC. Daniel also serves as President of the Cal Berkeley Democrats, the largest chapter of college Democrats in California. His efforts helped the UC Berkeley Vote Coalition register 8,500 students. Recently Daniel was selected as a grantee through the Shinnyo-en Peacebuilding Leadership Program for his “Project Student Voice: Voting and Opportunities in Civic Engagement”, which will promote civic engagement among UC Berkeley students and their middle school and high school peers through workshops and projects related to voter registration and advocacy about community issues. With a strong commitment to building healthy communities, and extraordinary strategic thinking and communication skills and attention to systemic injustices, we are proud to name Daniel Tuchler our campus Newman Fellow.
