Student Civic Leaders Receive Honors at National Education Conference

July 30, 2007

— Roslynn Almas of Brookhaven College (TX) and Douglas Finley of Georgetown University (DC) were presented with Campus Compact’s 2007 Frank Newman Leadership Award at the national Education Leadership Colloquium on the Civic Mission of American Education (ELC). They accepted before a crowd of policymakers, college and university presidents, faculty, students, and business leaders who were gathered to discuss national policy to advance citizenship education in preschool through college.

“These young people are the fuel for those teachers, professors, administrators, and staff at our campuses across the country,” stated Jay Lemons, president of Susquehanna University, Pennsylvania Campus Compact Board Chair, and presenter of the award. “Campus Compact remains committed to making the next 20 years equally impressive in terms of its impact in working with you — in raising up the next generation of civic leaders — so that American Democracy can continue to flourish.”

The ELC was hosted by the Education Commission of the States’ (ECS) National Center for Learning and Citizenship and co-hosted by Campus Compact, the American Association of School Administrators, the Center for Civic Education, and the National School Boards Association. Participants included Kathleen Sebelius, governor of Kansas; Roger Sampson, ECS president and Commissioner of Education in Arkansas; Jeanne Shaheen, director of the Institute of Politics at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and former governor of New Hampshire; Tim Kaine, governor of Virginia; Senator William Brock of Tennessee; and Marc S. Tucker, president of the National Center on Education and the Economy in Washington, DC.

Almas and Finley were honored for their dedication to public service and civic leadership potential. Each will receive $5,000 from Campus Compact and matching funds from their institution for school-related expenses or to support their service work. They will also receive guidance and support from university staff in fulfilling their scholastic, public service, and civic leadership potential during their college years.
