On October 12 & 13, 2010 at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., Campus Compact will convene an important gathering of its member college and university presidents.
The Presidents Leadership Summit is funded in part by Lumina Foundation for Education. Information about registration, guest speakers, and agenda is now available on our Events page. Please revisit www.compact.org for more information and for results of the Summit in the coming weeks.
President Barack Obama has issued a call to action: by the year 2020, he wants America to have the highest proportion of students graduating from college in the world. Campus Compact will convene a Summit meeting of up to 150 college and university member presidents—deep thinkers all—to directly respond to the President’s challenge.
We’ve got the means, talent, and influence to open a rich pipeline to education and opportunity all across this country. And there are measurable benefits to our institutions along the way. Come let your voice be heard. As diverse as our institutions are, we are deeply united in our conviction that the solution lies in a commitment to civic engagement.
We will begin on Tuesday evening, October 12th, with a nationally-known keynote speaker whose passion for civic engagement will set the stage for the following day’s program. Then, on Wednesday, we will review the compelling data showing that early interventions—informed through research and serious scholarship—work. We will explain how community-based research, engaged scholarship, and the nurturing of innovative community partnerships can result in civic engagement at its best on individual campuses and as a collective force.
Through dialogue, listening sessions, peer-to-peer discussions, and case examples, we will reveal the positive effect that civic engagement activities have on college access and success. President Obama has put us all on notice. His big, audacious goal is to provide every child access to a complete and competitive 21st century education—an education that will prepare each of them for success in the new global workplace. We have to help him deliver on that promise.
As college and university presidents, we are uniquely positioned to put the weight of our institutions behind the President’s goal. We can ensure that every bright, inquisitive, deserving young person—regardless of economic circumstance—receives the tools, skills, and encouragement he or she will need to navigate his or her way from childhood through college and on out into the world.
Our young people are counting on us to set them on the strongest path to success. On October 12 & 13, in a room at Georgetown University, we will respond to the President’s call for action.
