  • Revise calendar for the Freshmen Day of Service (FDoS) on semesters to weave FDoS into the entire year.
  • Increase advising on pathways to public service. Intentionally connect major exploration within the GS course to majors that have public service as a focus.  Include a related pre/post question on the freshmen student survey.
  • Develop advising resources on careers and service year opportunities for students in relevant majors.
  • Develop and facilitate ‘civic leadership’ mini-academy.
  • Through Project HOPE provide needed student support and services to empower students with the resources they need to address social and economic inequalities.
  • Adopt Institutional Community Partnership Assessment Benchmarks. These benchmarks will be shared across campus with requests for impact assessment around these benchmarks.   The CCE will host a focus group of community partners seeking their input on the relevance of benchmarks to their work.
  • Disseminate student learning outcomes and assessment mechanisms connected to civic learning as a university-wide resource. Connect outcomes to current community engagement efforts and activities. The CCE will host a focus group of community partners seeking their input on the relevance of outcomes to their work.
  • Improve communication and reporting on civic learning and community engagement.  Deans and AVPs report on community engagement activities including: civic learning, community-based learning, and community partnerships. This request will come from the Provost’s Office. The CCE will collect this data and request relevant reports from additional community-university initiatives such as HPN and Pioneers for Sustainable Communities.
  • Create a university-wide matrix that details partnerships, programs, courses, and related student activities for assessment efforts.
  • Showcase civic engagement of students, departments, and programs. Build upon campus celebration of MLK at the yearly breakfast to include poster session that recognizes and highlights campus-community partnerships and civic learning connected to these partnerships to reinforce civic learning as a university value.
  • Include a question in Program Review that asks if departments are reporting community engagement or utilizing CalStateS4.
  • Participate in national study of student voting.
  • Broaden RTP document to revise community service language to community engagement.
  • Create a community-based learning general education overlay after semester conversion to ensure the infusion of community-based learning in the lower division experience.
  • Setup data feed from CalStateS4, which tracks community-based learning placements, and the Freshmen Day of Service Dashboard, to BayAdvisor, an advising platform with analytics based on ten years of information about our students and what helps them succeed.
  • Institutionalize a collaboration between the freshmen common read and Book to Action.
  • Audit Community Partnership Agreements (MOUs) housed in Purchasing as the first step in streamlining the campus Community Partnership Agreement (MOU) process.
  • Streamline the campus Community Partnership Agreement (MOU) process to create a unified campus Agreement system in accordance with Executive Orders.
  • Create baseline and standardized curriculum for the CSUEB freshmen GS experience with a particular focus on teaching around the Freshmen Day of Service.
  • Creation of a credit/no credit assignment for freshmen attendance at the Get Connected to Service Fair or research of Freshmen Day of Service community partner agencies.
  • Intentional collaboration and cross training between Pioneers for Change and Peer Mentors.
  • Create a transcript notation with graduation honor stole recognizing hours of community service students completed.  40 and 100 hour benchmarks.
  • Develop lower division a civic engagement/service learning experience course that can be housed in any department for sophomores (similar to an independent study designation or cooperative education)
  • Work with Faculty Development to host workshops and dialogues for faculty on civic learning in disciplines
  • Develop and find funding for Civic Fellowships for Students. Fellowships provide financial support for students engaged in civic projects connected to their field of study.
