Tabitha Hutto, Charleston Southern University

Tabitha Hutto, a junior at Charleston Southern University, is committed to serving all people with dignity and respect. As a member of the service club Rotaract, secretary for the Campus Activities Board, and a regular visitor to the office of community service, Tabitha is a leader who facilitates civic engagement amongst her peers. She is a mentor to a student at Stall High School, and she has recruited several of her classmates to get involved in weekly mentoring as well. She also played an integral part in planning Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week 2014 which included a collection of over 100 items for a local food bank. Tabitha has an empathetic heart providing her the motivation to find solutions to social issues. Based on her role as a university student leader, Tabitha’s future will impact many lives.

To me giving back to the community is a big part of who I am. I want to be that person to help others make a difference no matter if it is big or small. Making a difference in the community can impact others to make a difference as well. To me, I believe when you give back to the community you are given the opportunity to learn about what others go through that you might not be able to get to learn otherwise. During the Hunger and Homelessness Week, I learned that people that are just like us can be living in homelessness and you don’t even know it. Giving back to the community no matter if it is mentoring, food services, at a nursing home, or with homelessness can make an impact and a difference if the time is taken to learn about the community that you are in.
