Rocio Campos, Madonna University

Rocio Campos, a Sociology student at Madonna University, is a student leader active in issues of education, youth development, neighborhood safety, and community leadership. Rocio has served as an AmeriCorps member helping community members to access public resources and work towards self-sufficiency. She is currently involved in youth development initiatives at SER-Metro, Inc., an organization dedicated to preparing youth and adults for workforce access and success. Rocio is also an active parent who serves on the Coalition for the Future of Detroit School Children. The coalition provides Detroit Public Schools administration with recommendations for improved education services. As a parent of school-age children, Rocio informs action plans aimed at improving services and increasing parental involvement in schools. Additionally, Rocio is completing a year of service as part of the Ford Community Corps program. The FCC is a service-leadership program focused on matching academic interests with non-profit needs. Rocio is an effective Corps member of the Sociology team which has partnered with the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative to identify long-term solutions for residents plagued with food insecurity and neighborhood blight. Rocio is committed to civic engagement, building relationships, and partnering with the community at-large to address pressing social issues.

As a catalyst of change, when thinking of civic engagement the first element that comes to mind is community. I believe in giving back to the communities that have invested in the lives of so many. As a stakeholder of my community, I have the responsibility to join others and solve social problems that hinder our neighbors, families, and specially our children. I am passionate about K-12 education, youth development, neighborhood safety and community leadership. I learned to give back to my community at a very young age, helping migrant children learn the English language. As time progressed, my dedication and passion for helping others resulted in a year of service as an AmeriCorps member where I helped community members identify resources to support their basic needs. I have also utilized my knowledge, skills, and experience as a Ford Community Corps to address issues such as food insecurity and neighborhood blight in partnership with the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative. During and after graduation I plan to continue my work of community engagement in all aspects of my life.
