Lindsey Streich, University of Rhode Island

Lindsey StreichMs. Streich approaches addressing the root cause of social issues by reaching out to students who might not think they can serve or be part of a group during college, and inspiring them to believe in themselves and the power to make a difference. When leading and serving, Lindsey focuses much of her attention on engaging, supporting, and challenging other volunteers. As a Resident Advisor for underclassmen, she felt drawn to assist students in finding themselves through both service and social functions. After much research, Lindsey’s goal transformed into the establishment of a chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a national non-residential service fraternity, on the URI campus. She worked tirelessly to engage a student executive board, faculty and staff advisors, community alumni and leaders, as well as participants. Ms. Streich’s goal for APO, is to see it continue as an inclusive organization that can provide its members with opportunities to develop leadership skills, build strong friendships and serve the campus, community and nation.
-David Dooley, President

Being involved with many civic engagement opportunities over the last three years of college has shaped my life, my passions and my goals. From completing two 300 hour AmeriCorps terms, two Alternative Spring Break trips, being apart of the Civic Engagement Leader team, executing numerous Resident Advisor philanthropy events, and to being the President of a national service organization, civic engagement is, not only a huge part of my life, but a huge part of who I am. Through service I have grown as an individual, have acquired a variety of useful skills and have gained experience with working with and leading others. I desire to take this passion into my future career as a secondary school teacher. I believe teachers have the power to motivate an adolescent to accomplish their goals, to ignite a student’s interests and influence a teenager’s future choices. Similar to my civic engagement, I hope teaching is something I love and find fulfillment in. I truly believe anyone has the power to make a change in the world, and that is what I’m doing.
