Corey Culver, Century College
Corey Culver, a second year student at Century College in White Bear Lake, was last year’s Outstanding Sociology Student. In addition to succeeding academically, he is the Vice President of Service for the honor society, Phi Theta Kappa. He has completed the Century College Leadership Institute, is a leader in the Young Student Parent Support Initiative, and has become a member of Student Senate and Brother 2 Brother. Corey takes initiative to rally students for many good causes and events on campus and in the community. He recently founded the Social Change Club at Century, designed to give other students an opportunity to work on social justice issues. It is gaining momentum on campus and has attracted many interested students. His drive to help others comes from firsthand experience, and as one of the Century faculty states, “It is clear that Corey wants to do more than study social problems; he wants to be involved in working to address them. He plans to attain a PhD in Sociology as a path to make that happen and will no doubt stay involved in social justice work.”
-Ron Anderson, President
Thanks to the faculty, staff, administration and students for creating such an amazing atmosphere to be in. Every club, organization, and event at Century that I have been a part of has had a positive impact on me as a person. I can remember struggling at different stages in my life and not having the help that I needed so I try to help others as much as I can. I’d like to show everyone how much people can accomplish by working together. I’ve recently founded the Social Change Club at Century where we are currently raising awareness on racial inequalities in Minnesota, after which we will be writing legislators to ask for policies that will help end the inequalities. Some other things we’ve done is collect blankets for homeless children in St. Paul and help people rebuild and move into Habitat for Humanity homes. I do these things because I know firsthand how much of a difference people can make in your life by just being there.
