Wislene Augustin
Gordon College
Wislene Augustine, a third year student at Gordon College, is a student leader on campus and active in addressing issues of racial reconciliation both on our campus and in her home community. She has brought her leadership to multiple areas of our campus including Student Government, Orientation, Clarendon Scholars, and the Gospel Choir. She brings her passion for justice into each of these areas; she has demonstrated her passion both in and out of the classroom. She has organized on campus events to help facilitate critical conversations among students; completed research on the intersectionality of Psychology, Christian ministry, and racial reconciliation. Her education is preparing as she intends to serve as an advocate of incarcerated young people and their families.
Personal Statement
I have always had a passion for social justice, specifically juveniles and prison systems, from a very young age. I have had the opportunity to expand my perspective on social justice while being in college by leading a student led organization called ALANA which advocates for racial reconciliation and diversity on campus. We look to create an awareness among the student body and engage them in difficult conversations. Through this organization I have been able to identify racial tensions and navigate peacemaking through dialogue and events. I have had the opportunity to serve marginalized groups in Seattle whether they were homeless, a refugee, or a woman in sex trafficking over the summer. I have also served high risk youth through an organization called Straight Ahead Ministries in Lynn, MA. Ultimately, I am continuously seeking ways to be involved in my immediate community, to identify the needs and be able to plug into those areas. My hope one day is to be able to advocate on the behalf of those who feel as if they do not have a voice.
