Personal Statement

Rita Pierson once said, “Every child deserves a champion—an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.” I have always aspired to be an educator. I started volunteering at after-school programs during high school to help teach children that they have positive things to look forward to when they grow up.

Benedict College has provided me with many opportunities to continue the work that I began in high school by engaging in service-learning. Through these experiences, I was able to make connections at several local agencies. Every time I walked through the doors, I was greeted with the smiling faces of children who were happy to see me. It is one thing to teach a child, but another to develop a special connection. Through my interactions, children have disclosed personal issues to me that they may not have felt comfortable sharing with others. These are the moments that I treasure because it shows that I am making an impact on their lives. I am grateful for opportunities to edify our youth, one child at a time.
