Shaydaih Williams

William Paterson University

Shaydaih Williams, a junior majoring in Public Health with a minor in Health Studies, has served the WP and local community by participating in over 50 university coordinated civic engagement activities encompassing almost 1000 hours of service. As VP of Students of Service and member of several other student organizations, Shaydaih organizes activities that encourage students to serve. Shaydaih's passion for service includes working with the elderly and addressing food insecurity. She volunteers at the WP Pioneer Pantry, coordinates programs to assemble care packages and school kits, and works with organizations to raise awareness regarding breast cancer, lupus, autism, food insecurity, equal access to education, and mentoring. In her community, Shaydaih mentors high school students at the Greater Newark Conservancy, tutors children at Newark YMCA, and encourages voter registration and engagement within the city and town hall meetings. She coordinated a coat drive, purchased and packaged food for the homeless in Newark, and created healthy meal packages for residents at a senior facility. Shaydaih's leadership, involvement and commitment to serving the William Paterson University and the community inspires other students to serve with love and respect.

Personal Statement

Growing up I learned to give when I could, so giving back has always been important to me. I believe that in life you must be a blessing to others to receive blessings. Although I have always been civically engaged, William Paterson University helped me to fully understand my purpose in life - being a blessing to others. Not everyone has access to education, health care, food, employment, and a healthy living environment. As a Public Health major and servant leader, I hope to inspire my peers and the people around me to make the necessary changes to help my community. Being a transfer student, I initially felt secluded and unfamiliar with activities and clubs on campus. After my first semester at WP, I became a social butterfly, and participated in nearly every civic engagement event! I joined several student organizations including VP of Students of Service, and a member of Sisters for Awareness Black Leadership and Equality and Black Student Union. I was also inducted into the National Society Leadership and Success. I am dedicated to the service of others, and I seek out opportunities to collaborate with organizations on and off campus to better our community.
