Personal Statement

Community is the largest reason behind everything I do. I study International politics and Spanish and have consistently found that discussion and listening are what opens the door to empathy. With this quality, leaders can create policies that affirm human dignity and create safer communities. It fascinates me that laws have the ability to provide the space for a society to safely live, study science, practice the arts, and give back to the community. However, I have come to understand that passion and empathy, if not confirmed by solid knowledge and experience, do not lead to tangible results. My work with Mission Adelante, alongside families who have immigrated to the U.S. has only confirmed my desire to work with international conflicts and I hope to use this fellowship as an opportunity to grow my abilities to not only spur collaboration and communication but to encourage tangible change that goes beyond rhetoric. I would love the ability to work alongside other determined students to tackle together some of the issues that we all face.
