Pat Pataranutaporn, a third year biology student at Arizona State University, is a creative social innovator who believes in the power of technology, human-centered design, and use-inspired research to develop transdisciplinary solutions to the world's most pressing and complex problems. In his freshman year at ASU, Pat worked collaboratively with peers, faculty and community members to develop an award-winning data analytics technology which identifies crisis key words on social media and connects users to suicide prevention resources. Additionally, he has leveraged biomimicry design to develop an affordable product that traps high-protein insects as a solution to the global hunger crisis. This design was a top 3 winner of the Global Biomimicry Design Challenge. Pat was also awarded the ASU Changemaker Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2016 for his many efforts to inspire and encourage other students to employ an entrepreneurial mindset to solve society's grand challenges. Pat exemplifies the principles and values of the Newman Civic Fellowship and those of Frank Newman, including a belief in the interconnectedness of individuals to make a difference and a relentless and selfless optimism for the future.
