Meghan Elmore

Saint Joseph's College

Meghan is currently a junior at Saint Joseph's College, double majoring in psychology and social work. She is deeply involved in a number of community-based activities on campus, including the Active Minds organization, through which she works to raise awareness among her fellow students and the campus community about mental health issues. She is also a passionate supporter of Catherine's Cupboard, a food pantry in Standish, Maine that was founded and is supported by the College. Through her ongoing work there, she has introduced new programs to support the organization's clients and, as a result, has been able to involve more of her fellow students in the good work of the Cupboard. Meghan demonstrates time and again that she has the talents and passion so important for those who are committed to making positive social change.

Personal Statement

I am honored to be nominated for the Newman Civic Fellows Award and to represent Saint Joseph's College of Maine. My three years at Saint Joseph's has given me numerous opportunities to help the community, which I am very thankful for as a newly developing social worker. I have served as an intern at Catherine's Cupboard Food Pantry for a year and a half and continue to volunteer there weekly. I serve as president of the Active Minds Club on campus as well. Our current fundraiser I organized supports suicide prevention awareness and training through the national organization. I am also vice president of the Social Work Society, and our most recent fundraiser provided presents for five children on Christmas morning. Currently I am preparing to drive a school van of students to Manhattan for our annual "Midnight Run" to bring winter coats and other clothing to as many homeless people as we can in 24 hours. I am an intern at St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, where I work under the supervision of a licensed medical social worker in the Cardiology and ICU wing. My involvements create a nearly full schedule but for me, helping others is not a chore, but merely a habit that helps me as well.
