Luis Sorto is an exemplary student leader who has fervently worked to improve the quality of life of immigrants and stand in solidarity with them as they pursue justice. Luis's participation in Young Leaders in Education About Diversity (YLEAD) provided him with the skills to be reflective and engage in dialogues about diversity and the promotion of social justice, which he quickly applied through several on and off-campus activities. As the Freshmen Representative of Hoyas for Immigrant Rights, he organized students to attend a vigil at the White House where he spoke about the plight of children fleeing violence in Central America and the inhumane conditions at immigrant detention centers. Luis has also served as a tutor, mentor, and coordinator for the DC Schools Project, an English-language support program for immigrants in DC. His experiences with immigrant youth have motivated him to organize an Alternative Break for students and staff who will travel to Los Angeles and explore the root causes of gang culture, their connections to El Salvador, and restorative justice programs. Luis constantly strives to expand his knowledge of social issues, apply his skills and motivate others to work for the common good.
