Ky’ Achia Atkins

West Virginia State University

Ky'Achia has the lead as Captain of our Ladies Cross-Country team, President of the WVSU NAACP, revitalizing the interest and membership from 6 students to 28 in one year. She has been a representative as our University Research Rookie and studied abroad in Italy to study chromosomal abnormalities. Ky' Achia takes it upon herself to provide exceptional support and service to new students. She discerns quickly their individual needs and moves efficiently to provide key information, recommendations, or direction. Beyond this and during times of transition, she has served as the Vice-President and Treasurer of her Sorority, Coordinates Community Service and was selected as Ms. Sophomore 2018. Ky' Achia is a wonderful ambassador for our university always willing to pitch in for the good of the community regardless of the mission. Ky' Achia has made a difference at our university, exemplified the mission of the university, and has positively impacted the people around her. Her skills, knowledge, willingness to help others, and dedication to our university and the community make her our Newman Civic Fellowship nominee. It is without reservation that I nominate Ms. Adkins for this prestigious award.

Personal Statement

I have always been action oriented and believe that whatever I do, and where ever I go, I should make a difference. I first became involved in campus and community advocacy through my Sorority and other organizations such as the NAACP because I saw the need. Many appeared apathetic about our role in making change or supporting a cause that could affect us directly or indirectly so I started a voting drive. I wanted students to get involved and to care about how we leave the place better. I lead leadership discussions with my peers to share ideas on campus engagement. I believe it is important to make a difference and to show that your community matters.
