Kelsey Mitchell

Capital University

Serving as a Community Engagement Intern, Kelsey Mitchell has spearheaded opportunities for her peers to get to know neighbors in the Near East Side of Columbus, a neighborhood close to Capital University's campus, where the University is working to build lasting partnerships. Kelsey will take the lead in planning the final community Block Party this spring, along with a partner church, helping to organize student participants, as well as helping children, talking with neighbors, and assisting in resource deployment. In short, she has become a treasured contributor to the partnership.

Personal Statement

My investment in community engagement spans across more than one topic of focus. On campus I have the privilege of serving as a Community Engagement intern in the Office of Student & Community Engagement. I am tasked with projects geared toward the goal of building bridges between members of the community and Capital's campus. I am most proud of the work I do with Kids Kamp. Kids Kamp is an event where children from a local neighborhood come to campus and do a small service project, coupled with fun activities and lunch. It is a time to show them that their goals and dreams can extend past their neighborhood. I also serve on the executive board for Leaders Emerging and Developing, as well as service as the philanthropy co-chair for Sigma Alpha Beta. Our focus is to raise money and awareness for Flying Horse Farms, a local camp that provides magical, transformative camp experiences for children with serious illnesses and their families. When I leave Capital, I hope that I am able to use my skills in public relations to be a tool in a movement for positive change.
