Katerina Alvarez

Mt. Holyoke College

As a Posse Foundation Scholar, Ms. Alvarez was one of 60 students selected from a pool of nearly 1300 nominees for a full-tuition leadership scholarship, and we consider ourselves fortunate to have welcomed her to Mount Holyoke College’s class of 2020. Ms. Alvarez’s work builds on an exceptional relationship we have fostered to bring talented, community-minded women from the Miami metropolitan area to our campus. She is studying Statistics and Sociology with a focus on STEM and issues facing Latinx populations in the United States. Ms. Alvarez is currently connecting her roles as a student-athlete, volunteer recruitment manager, and as a Community Fellow with the Community-Based Learning Program in the Weissman Center for Leadership. As a Community Fellow, she has undertaken a year-long commitment to leadership development involving experiential learning, civic engagement, training, planning, advocacy, relationship building on-and-off campus, theories and practices of social justice, and community organizing. In her role as C.A.U.S.E. Co-Chair, Ms. Alvarez has been active in connecting the college’s cultural and identity organizations with community service opportunities, with special efforts to bring underrepresented young mothers and their families from the Care Center onto campus for college awareness and college access activities, and to support other underserved populations in area communities to gain valuable educational and college preparatory support.

Personal Statement

Hello! My name is Katerina. I'm a Posse Foundation Scholar at Mount Holyoke College, Class of 2020, studying Statistics and Sociology. As a Latina civic leader and STEM advocate, my passions include advancing social justice, education and community development with tech. My commitment to purposeful engagement with the world is best portrayed through my work as the Community-Based Learning Advanced Fellow at The Care Center, a transformative education program in Holyoke supporting and empowering young mothers to complete the high school equivalency exam and pursue higher education. In order to break barriers and inspire academic success, I've developed a bi-weekly tutoring program containing more than 30 Spanish-speaking student volunteers and an innovative partnership with Makerspace, a laboratory on campus with aims at inspiring and educating underrepresented students in STEM. In addition, I'm also the Chair of a student organization called, CAUSE: Creating Awareness and Unity for Social Equity, and Assistant to Associate Director of Community Engagement, Angelica Castro, where I lead office hours to help connect students to local volunteer opportunities and other fellows to build successful and sustainable community partnerships.
Outside of Mount Holyoke and CBL, I've taken community engagement work to a global scale. Last summer, I was a Data Analyst Intern with UNICEF, The United Nations Children's Fund, in Geneva, Switzerland and look forward to this upcoming summer where I've accepted an internship with Google in Colorado. Post-graduation, I hope to land a job with Google.org,
developing data-driven, human-focused philanthropy. Thank you!
