Jessica Rush
Simmons College
Jessica Rush, a second year student at Simmons College, wants to work so that more first generation college students can come to college equipped with financial literacy. She is committed to and works closely in her home community: planning and organizing rallies, protests and demonstrations in response to policies that target low-income communities. Jessica wants to use the knowledge she has gained from her education at Simmons to help more potential college students from low-income communities to navigate the finances behind attending and succeeding in college.
Personal Statement
Having grown up in a low-income, single-parent household, I was often on the receiving end of community service programs, rather than on the giving end. Therefore, I am acutely aware of the significant impact such programs can have on a child and on a family. Now that I am in a position where I am able to support myself, I feel it is my duty to "pay-it-forward" and devote my time and energy to helping those who need it. I have spent my time at Simmons College studying Political Science and Public Policy with the hope that, in addition to making contributions to my community on an individual level, I can someday help to make legislative changes that will benefit my community on a larger scale.
I am a member of the Pre-Law Liaison on campus, and I hope to attend law school after completing my education at Simmons. Ultimately, I aspire to be able to advocate for the civil rights and liberties of the most vulnerable segments of society.
