Jeshua Van Sickle

Weber State University

Jeshua Van Sickle transferred to Weber State University (WSU) in Ogden, Utah, from Iowa State. With his transfer Jeshua brought a passion and engagement for his work with Special Olympics Iowa to the Special Olympics Utah office. For the past two years, Jeshua has worked with the Utah office to implement programs and brainstorm ideas around best practices he learned in Iowa. It is through this work that Jeshua is assisting the Utah office with creating and running new programs. He has been invited to the Special Olympics World Games this summer as a presenter and attendee.

Jeshua is a great mentor to other students, sharing his devotion to Special Olympics' mission as he works to recruit volunteers and build capacity. Jeshua also has a dedication for supporting those in poverty and those in the foster care system. He is a compassionate leader who listens to others, and learns from others, while also sharing his own ideas. He lives by the outlook of valuing human life, and does all he can to help everyone see the value each individual brings. Jeshua is a talented student who is utilizing his skills and passion in a positive manner, though he will readily tell you he is the one benefiting the most from his relationships.

Personal Statement

The ability to invest in others and support their well-being is what drives me toward a degree in the health field, as well as the volunteer work I do. These pieces also are behind my interests surrounding the value in human life. I have been fortunate to engage in many meaningful projects with Special Olympics Iowa and Special Olympics Utah. In efforts to minimize division between society and individuals with intellectual disabilities, I have planned and participated in several events locally, nationally, and internationally. Currently, I am preparing to travel to Austria, where at the Special Olympics World Winter Games I will present our new programs for Special Olympics Utah at the International Unified Summit. The new programs I will work on over the next year focus on both unity and inclusion for our athletes in everyday activates. I believe everyone should be included and there should not be a neglect toward others. With events such as Young Athletes and Global Messengers, I continue to advocate for a Generation Unified.
