Jermel Wright
Stonehill CollegeJermel Wright, Stonehill College Class of 2018, is a strong leader on the football field, in the classroom, and in the community. During his time at Stonehill, along with serving locally, Jermel has created his own mentorship program in Boston called Level Up, serving 7th and 8th grade male students of color. This mentorship program has given him the opportunity to engage in dialogue with young men in his community about race and education. He feels strongly about giving back to his community, something he says comes very naturally to him and truly embodies Stonehill College's mission to "create a more just and compassionate world."
Personal Statement
During my time at Stonehill College, I have volunteered with Trinity Catholic Academy, My Brother's Keeper and I have started my own mentoring program at my alma mater. Implemented at my alma mater, the Level Up Program works to help give guidance to male students of color in 7th and 8th grade in the METCO program. The METCO busses students from inner-city neighborhoods in Boston to the suburbs in order to receive a higher quality education. We discuss the challenges that come with bussing from Boston to Newton while placing emphasis on their academics and overcoming the social challenges of being students of color in a predominately white institution.
Being an active member in my community comes natural to me. It is simple, without the help I have received my entire life I would not have been able to thrive as a student-athlete at Stonehill College the way I am today. It is a privilege to be in my position, therefore I see it as my duty to help people surpass their own expectations and thrive in environments they may not have thought possible because there was a time when I felt the same way.
