Personal Statement

Over the years, I have learned that the struggles that I faced growing up are struggles that another kid is possibly facing today. Only having just enough food to eat and playing outside around trash and dirt was hard, and seeing that those struggles still exist for others inspired me to be bold. My community service involvement is focused on creating change in my community. I engage deeply in community service because I believe in the saying "we are the people, for the people." This quote makes me think about every time I volunteer at a service site how I contribute to the things that others might take for granted. Making people in your community smile, laugh, and cry with tears of gratitude shows that you are genuinely making a difference. As a member of the S.E.R.V.E. committee at California State University, Fresno, I lead one-day service events with the goal of enhancing the lives of current and future residents. My goal in being a student leader is to have an everlasting heart for servant leadership and improving the lives of others.
