Emma Hartswick

Emma Hartswick is a phenomenal leader who has a gift for collaboration and leadership. She is passionate, reflective and possesses a sophisticated understanding of community, which she successfully leverages to make positive change.
Emma is currently the '82 Upper Valley Social Entrepreneurial Fellow at the Dartmouth Center for Service. This fellowship supports students with funding and mentoring as they partner with a local agency on a sustainable, innovative, capacity building project. Emma' s fellowship is with the Upper Valley Public Health Advisory Council (UVPHC), where she has been instrumental in helping this coalition of non-profit and healthcare providers identify foci for their work and develop a regional strategic plan for health improvement. Throughout her time at UVPHC, Emma has sought to both grow as an individual and deepen her impact in the community by giving her work her 110%.
Emma's success at UVPHC is just one piece of her genuine commitment to the community. She has served as a leader of a local mentoring program, volunteers for Dartmouth EMS, and mentors peers as an undergraduate adviser in residential life. I am certain that Emma's skill, personal drive and passion for engagement will move her to continue this legacy of service. For these reasons, we are pleased to recognize Emma as this year's Dartmouth recipient of Campus Compact's Newman Civic Fellows Award.
Personal Statement
A very dear mentor of mine taught me that there is a world of difference between helping, fixing and serving, an adage she borrows from Rachel Naomi Remen. I have tried to embody these words - I strive to listen with empathy and work collaboratively to find solutions for which there is need and readiness as the foundation for all the work that I do. At Dartmouth, I have acted as a co-chair of Runners Stick Together, a mentorship program that connects college and middle school students through conversation and healthy activity. I have also spent the last year working as the Upper Valley Social Entrepreneurship Fellow at the Mascoma Valley Health Initiative. My main work has been to foster partnerships with other social service organizations and to coordinate joint action to address key public health priorities identified by the community. I support my classmates as a peer advisor to freshman students, and as a care provider with our Emergency Medical Service. All of this work is inspired by community needs and built on community partnerships, and I hope to continue to learn how I can use the resources I've been given and the skills I've developed to truly serve.
