Personal Statement

I spent my first few years of college trying to find where I could be the most useful in bringing about positive social change. Through both my community-engaged experiences and my on campus activities, I built up my skills as an organizer. I realized that strong movements need strong foundations and those structures were missing in the organizing I'd seen on campus. Over the last year, my work has focused on bringing all the people working on different social justice issues together into one coalition rooted in equity and inclusion. By connecting people and creating an agenda that addresses structural issues on our campus, not only can we achieve fundamental change, but we build relationships and organizing structures that last beyond the four years of college. This work has resulted in a 10-year sustainability and social justice plan for my college done in collaboration with students, faculty, and staff. Through working intersectionally, we are able to address the root causes of social inequity instead of the symptoms.
