Bushra Islam

Cabrini University

Bushra Islam is a graduating senior Business Management major with an HR Management Minor at Cabrini University, and will be enrolled in the Global MBA program at Cabrini this fall. Our mission is entitled “Education of the Heart,” and Bushra lives out that mission every day. Bushra has served as President of the Muslim Student Association during the last two COVID-impacted school years, and has maintained the group’s involvement on campus while many other student groups have faded. Just this year MSA led a collaborative campus effort to collect clothing for Afghan evacuees, helping deliver more than twenty boxes of like-new clothing to our partner organizations. Bushra has been a public speaker in events on campus, increasing interfaith understanding and appreciation for the Muslim faith. She is a GearUP tutor, assisting high school students in Norristown, working towards her goal of 300 hours of community service as a NextSteps AmeriCorps member. This spring, MSA will be hosting a Ramadan speaker series, Hijab Day, and an interfaith discussion of fasting. Cabrini University is proud of Bushra as a leader in civic engagement, and we look forward to seeing her life of service and social change blossom in the years to come.

Personal Statement

I first became involved in charity and volunteering work during high school attending my local mosque serving to the poor during Ramadan. My most recent work involves a clothing drive I have held during my senior year in college. This clothing drive was held at Cabrini University to help Afghan refugees who were seeking shelter. I worked on this project and partnered with Cabrini’s DEI team, as the organizer. I worked with other clubs on campus to collect clothes, all clothes were donated to 3 different non-profits. A local clothing donation called The Wardrobe nonprofit that helps eliminate clothing insecurity by outfitting people for life or work; second half of our donations went to Mitzvah Circle a non-profit organization helping families from all walks of life, by providing clothing, diapers, new strollers and car seats, toiletries, household items and other necessities; and our remaining clothes to ICNA (Islamic Circle of North America) Relief provides relief and development in a dignified manner regardless of gender, race, or religion, and works to empower individuals in their communities and give them a voice in the world. We were able to donate over 25+ large boxes of donations to help these organizations.
