Amal Warsame

Augsburg College

Amal Warsame is a senior at Augsburg College and has been engaged in a wide array of civic leadership efforts since she arrived as a first year student. Her leadership on campus and off will have lasting effect long after she graduates. Amal is a principled and engaged world citizen, a committed student and a natural community connector.
Concerned that many youth in the neighborhood surrounding campus - most of East African decent, like herself - didn't have access to College Possible, a program she benefitted from in high school, Amal developed West Bank College Bound. This program for middle and high school students who live near Augsburg connected them with first generation college student for mentoring, homework help, and college exploration. Likewise, this created an attractive opportunity for Augsburg students to engage directly with their community in a new way. Amal managed the unstructured dynamic well - far better than many of her peers - and made it a productive experience for everyone involved.
